Celebrating uniqueness: The power of inclusive education
More and more teachers face the challenge of how to integrate students with special needs in their mainstream class. This is partly the outcome of a general trend towards accommodating children with special needs in mainstream schools rather than in special school settings. Inclusive education means giving all children the ability to be part of a typical school community, and to be able to participate and contribute in ways that they can, because nature makes differences but society makes handicaps. In an Inclusive environment, all the children experience: a greater sense of the community in which we live, increased opportunity to develop social skills, a greater empathy for differences and challenges that individuals face, see children with exceptionalities as people.
This course aims to provide teachers a better understanding of the topic and show how with simple changes teachers can make their teaching and their classroom more inclusive. Furthermore, it aims to help teachers to identify strategies to get the additional support they need.
